The history behind the game

The Atlantic world of 1715

Silver & Sails is set between 1715 and about 1730, the last years of the Golden Age of Piracy, when sugar, tobacco, salt cod and enslaved people crossed the Atlantic in sailing ships. These pages tell the true story of the ports, pirates, cargoes and ships in the game, with sources, and they sort the legends from the records.

How we write these pages

Each page is researched from museums, archives, universities and historians, and lists at least three sources. Pirate history is full of tall tales, many of them first printed in a 1724 book by "Captain Charles Johnson", so we say clearly when something is a legend and what the records show instead. Dates follow the calendar used at the time. The slave trade is part of this history, and we tell it honestly and with care.

The game itself is a game: prices and battles are invented, but the places, people and dates are real. If you spot a mistake, please tell us.
